Why do I need a UniFi Cloud Gateway?

UniFi Cloud Gateways are UniFi consoles which have a built-in gateway to enable Routing, VPN, network security including an application-aware firewall.

UniFi Cloud Gateways run UniFi OS which means they also run UniFi Network for managing your UniFi network devices. Some UniFi Cloud Gateways run additional UniFi applications for managing other UniFi devices, e.g. UniFi Protect for the UniFi camera range.

If you were to choose to just use a UniFi Gateway then you would also need a UniFi console to manage and configure it. This would either need to be an additional piece of hardware or a self hosted UniFi Network server creating extra work.

Using a UniFi console that runs UniFi OS means that you don’t have to maintain the underlying OS and perform upgrades as you would if you were running your own UniFi network server.

There is a complete range of UniFi Cloud Gateways, from rackmount, to wall mount and compact desktop models. 

Some UniFi Cloud Gateways, such as the UX and UniFi Dream Wall also include a wireless access point so make an all in one solution suitable for the home or small office.

Some UniFi Cloud Gateways such as the UDM-Pro range (UDM-Pro, UDM-SE and UDM-Pro-Max) support the addition of a hard drive for storage for UniFi Protect cameras. The UDM-SE also provides 8 PoE ports for powering PoE UniFi Protect cameras. The UDM-Pro-Max supports two hard drives in RAID configuration.

The UCG-Max is the ultimate compact UniFI Cloud Gateway as it not only supports all the UniFi applications it also supports the addition of NVME M2 storage for the storage for UniFi Protect cameras. For a home or small office this could also include one of the UniFi doorbells and you have a doorbell with a camera and storage of the video without any additional licensing or cloud storage fees.
