News: MikroTik and Ubiquiti fix WPA2 Client Vulnerability

For those unfamiliar with this latest WPA2 Security Vulnerability, please bear in mind the problem is on the client device, not the AP. Therefore rushing to patch your APs is not going to solve all the problems in your network from this vulnerability!

Of course, if you’re using WPA-TKIP (or using ‘both’ TKIP and AES), you DO have more problems than this attack. Therefore please ensure that any support for TKIP is disabled!  If you’re using WEP, this vulnerability will not affect you, but then again, you have even bigger problems anyway!

Ubiquiti UAP AC IW in UK Back boxes

Mounting the UAP AC In-Wall

The Ubiquiti UAP AC in wall (UAP-AC-IW) has arrived and unlike the previous In-wall Unifi the AC variant is built to support multiple mounting and back box designs including UK back boxes.

The Unifi AC In-Wall does not mount in wall like the name would suggest, instead it mounts to the surface of the backbox leaving 30mm sticking out. This is better for RF performance as the radio will have less wall to power through improving performance.

HowTo: Improved CAPsMAN Wireless Client Roaming

CAPsMAN is a very useful method of setting up a large number of APs (CAPs) in a building, but how can you help a client to roam better?  The problem is that clients can get “sticky”. They refuse to disconnect themselves from an AP, even though they have actually moved their location and are now much closer to another AP.  The client software seems to hang in there for dear life, despite having a very poor and low speed of connection, but it seems to decide, “some connection, no matter how bad, is better than none at all, but I will not check to see if there are any other APs that are stronger”. So they remain “stuck” to that distant AP, even though there is a better one nearby.  So what’s the solution?

New Product: LinITX Embedded Controller

Controller Logo

About the Controller

The LinITX Embedded controller is simply an ALIX board with Linux embedded allowing the installation of various Debian packages. One such Debian package is the Ubiquiti UniFi controller which is available free from UBNT.com.

We get phone calls daily about setting up a UniFi controller. A lot of these phone calls come from installers with customers who do not want the Ubiquiti UniFi controller on their own computer and scenarios where it is not practical to have a dozen software controllers such as a UniFi install into a residential apartment complex.   This created a neat opportunity to test and build an embedded controller to bring the benefits of having an always-on hardware controller to the Ubiquiti range with no need to host it on a server or a personal computer.  Although we have now turned the UniFi Controller into a hardware solution the UniFi Web interface we all know will still be available for easy and quick configuration.
